TEF Canada French Language Test/ Exam

What is TEF?   

TEF or Test d’Evaluation de Francais is not only a french proficiency test but rather a general international level benchmark exam. It test french fluency of non native speakers. It was started in 1998 by CCIP. For proof of language ability, Canadian citizenship and permanent residence uses it. It uses a 7 level scale to measure french knowledge.  

Why TEF?   

Canada, the second largest country in the world, has obtained great attention as an attractive destination for immigration to begin a new life. As of the immigration level plan for 2020-2023, Canada expects to welcome over 1.2 million permanent residents. Aside from permanently residing in the country, Canada also offers a simple path to citizenship. The TEF exam is proof of language ability for citizenship applications and permanent residence. It is accepted by the Canadian government for a number of Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), the start-up visa program, and for applying as a self-employed worker.

TEF Exam Structure  

There are four modules – listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  

Written comprehension (Reading): 60 minutes — 50 questions.  

Written expression (Writing): 60 minutes — 2 topics.  

Oral comprehension (Listening): 40 minutes — 60 questions.  

Oral expression (Speaking): 15 minutes — 2 subjects.  

You can take the reading, writing, and listening modules at a computer in the test center. This is known as the online TEF or e-TEF.
