BEST TIME TO LEARN FRENCH FOR CANADA PR
Canada has two official languages- English and French. English is spoken in major parts of Canada, while French is widely spoken in Quebec and also used in many provincial services in Canada. So if you know French as well, you will have better opportunities in finding jobs, access services, and adjusting in Canada. If you are planning to move to Canada, learning French will help you in many ways during your PR process and will improve your chances of getting a permanent residency (PR).
IRCC gives you extra points if you know French!
If you are applying for Canada PR via Express Entry, you are given a score which is called the CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score. Your chances of getting an Invitation to Apply rises with the rise in your CRS score. If your score is NCLC 7 or more in the French language tests like TEF or TCF, and also CLB 5 or more in English, you can add up to 50 extra points to your CRS score.
You can even miss the english test, scoring NCLC 7 or more in french can get you 25 bonus points too. These extra points will help you reach the cut-off score and will increase the chances of you getting an ITA in express entry draws.
You become eligible for special express entry draws
IRCC now holds category-based express entry draws for specific groups of people, one of which is French-speaking candidates. Therefore, if you
- Have an express entry profile
- Have NCLC 7 or higher score in TEF or TCF
Then you have a chance of being selected in a french-language draw. As compared to the general draws, this has a lower CRS cut-off, which means there are better chances of being invited, even with a not-so-high score.
Make you eligible for more immigration programs
French-speaking people have more immigration programs open for them. Here are a few to mention-
- Quebec immigration (CSQ)
Your French knowledge will help you apply through the Quebec skilled worker program, where you will have to get a CSQ (certificat de selection du Quebec), which means that you are being selected officially by Quebec.
- OINP french-speaking skilled worker stream
If you know english and french, and have an express entry profile, you can apply for this stream which is run by ontario
- Francophone mobility program
You may be eligible for this program even with a score of NCLC 5. You are allowed to work in Canada temporarily with this program and can later apply for PR. It will also increase your chances in express entry.
Some other real advantages of learning french before you move to canada
- You can apply to more job opportunities, especially in healthcare, customer service, education and government jobs
- You will adjust and communicate better in both english and french speaking communities
- You can access services like hospitals, schools, and government offices more comfortably.
- Your profile will be overall stronger and will make it stand out
