TEF Canada French Language Test/ Exam

What is TEF?

Awarded by CCI Paris, TEF the Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF) is a general international level benchmark exam that test the fluency in French for non-native speakers. It was started in 1998 CCIP. For Canadian citizenship and permanent residence it is a proof of language ability by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). It measures the candidate French knowledge through a 7- level scale.

Why TEF?

The world second largest country Canada has earned a reputation as an attractive destination for immigration to start a life and also offers simple path to citizenship. According to the immigration level plan for 2020-2023 the country announced to welcome over 1.2 million permanent residents.

The TEF exam is a proof of language ability for Canadian citizenship applications and permanent residence. The exam is accepted by Canadian government for various Provincial Nominee Programs(PNPs), start-up visa program, and applying as a self-employed worker.

TEF exam structure

The test comprises four modules –listening, speaking, reading and writing.

  • Written comprehension (Reading): 60 minutes — 50 questions

  • Written expression (Writing): 60 minutes — 2 topics

  • Oral comprehension (Listening): 40 minutes — 60 questions

  • Oral expression (Speaking): 15 minutes — 2 subjects

You can take the reading, writing and listening modules on a computer at the designated test center under “e-TEF” which is an online version of TEF.
